The Board of Directors of the Sociedade Brasileira de Toxinologia (the Brazilian Society on Toxinology), The Board of Directors of the International Society on Toxinology and the Steering Committee are pleased to invite the scientific community, especially the toxinologists, and representatives of government agencies, nongovernment institutions and those from activity-related companies to participate in the XVI World Congress of the IST/X Congresso da SBTx to be held at the Eco Resort do Cabo (www.ecoresortdocabo.com.br), Cabo de Santo Agostinho, near Recife (www.recifecvb.com.br), Pernambuco, in the Brazilian Northeast region on March 15-20, 2009. Among the scientific activities foreseen, lectures, symposia and short oral presentations of papers are included in the program, besides poster sessions. These sessions represent a much favorable opportunity for information exchange among participants. Within the scope of the proposed subject of the congress, the latest scientific advances in the area, knowledge transfers and new technologies as well as an assessment of the role of toxinology in the context of the world scientific research are to be focused in the event.

Message From the President of International Society on Toxinology (I.S.T.)
It is with great pleasure I send this message to the local organizing committee of the 16th World congress on Animal ,Plant and Microbial Toxins and the 10th Congress of the Brazilian Society of Toxinology to be held from
15th to 20th March 2009 in Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Recife, Brazil.
I.S.T is a very specialized group of scientists about 500 in number around the world working on animal, Plant and Microbial Toxins.The world congress is organized once in three years and the regional conferences in between.
The field of toxinology is gaining prominence in the recent past especially among drug discoverers as well as by basic scientists who are looking for “sensitive and specific tools” to dissect physiological processes in Neuroscience such as neural transmission,memory,neuronal function etc or in Human blood coagulation cascade. In addition to the huge benefit to science and humanity, biological toxins also could be used for sinister purposes if fallen in the wrong hands.
As a scientific community we will have our checks and balances as well as diagnostic kits so that we work on these toxins safely and securely under the International Norms.
Countries like Brazil as well as other countries in the region have invaluable resources of biodiversity with unique fauna and flora which have not been explored fully. Bringing the world of toxinologists to Brazil will benefit both to Brazil and to the scientists who could foster International collaborations.
During the week long meeting there will be plenary lecturers, symposia,mini presentations and posters by experts from around the world. This is a unique opportunity to exchange scientific data in a pristine environment with loving Brazilian hospitality. I am certain the scientific as well as the social programmes as well as the Eco Resort location will attract lot of participants and make this another memorable world congress and put Brazil on the spot.
